The good news is you're buying a new house, but there are so many things to learn, so many decisions to be made, and relatively little free time to get them all done. Hopefully we can give you some sage advice: engage professionals to help.

Wiring the home for new and emerging technologies demands an understanding of the electrical demands of phone, networking and home entertainment. You could research this on your own, but bluntly, the learning curve is very steep and not a wise investment of your time. What would be an excellent investment of your time is researching and discussing the logistical issues of wiring. The who, what, where, when and how your telephones, computers, and home entertainment will be used today, and might be used in the future.
Wiring specifics are dependent on logistics and only you can provide that.

You received a guide for new home buyers called "Designing for home theater & technology". Pages 4 - 7 are dedicated to explaining wiring for a new home. The large illustration on pages 14 and 15 provide an overview for integrating the four categories of technologies into your home: entertainment, computing and comfort. Spend time discussing the needs of your family, and we'll help you with the appropriate wiring solution for your home.

New home building is extremely calendar oriented. It is very difficult to change specifications or stall for more time once construction begins. The graph below shows the sequence of events for wiring a new home. Consider the wiring "layouts" that apply to your house. The building dates are approximate and intended to show groundbreaking on a fictitious Jan 1. Your builder will provide you with a timetable or "Calendar of Events" for your home.

As you can see, there is a small window for phone, networking and home entertainment wiring to be completed. It must be done after the other tradesman have finished, and before the drywall goes up. Once the drywall goes up, as our teens are fond of saying... "game over." And to a large degree, they're correct. The window of opportunity has closed, and it's no longer economically practical to install wiring.
